Going Back To School

This year has been a great year, and I have been working on Operation Discover Myself. I really want to discover what I should do the rest of my life.  Getting in shape has given me the confidence to really start trying to do this.

My degree is in Communication.  It is such a broad degree, and so many people have it.  It also means so many different things to different people.  When I thought about becoming a high school teacher, the college said I could teach drama or speech with that degree.  I took two speech classes, and drama was its own department at BYU-Idaho.  So if I go back to school, I want to make sure I can specialize in something I love.

I have been thinking about nursing school.  I have been told several times that I have the aptitude and personality for it.  I think it would be just right for me.  I wouldn't be stuck behind a desk, and I would be working with and helping people.

So, I have several hoops to jump through.  I had good grades in college, not amazing grades, but that was because I was more interested in my social life or video games.  I now have to take a few classes to even be considered, AND I might need to retake a class or two just to bring up those grades to get in.  It is a very competitive thing to get into.

I have talked to some of my friends who are nurses, and I really want to make sure this is right for me before I do it.  I am feeling good about it.  Let me know what you think.

Rest day today.  I have my 9 miles in the morning tomorrow.

Since I'm married to a medical professional, I'll give you some advice from a spouse's point of view: One word - SPECIALIZE!
Don't be a nurse, be a trauma nurse, a pediatrics nurse, a surgical specialist, an anesthesia nurse, etc. Find a specialty and focus on it. I know you need to get through nursing school first, but you'll be much happier with your career choice and your options if you SPECIALIZE!

You should volunteer at a local hospital and see if you like it. Also watch Grey Anatomy. Just kidding on the last part :)

I think you would be a GREAT nurse. I spent A LOT of time in hospitals with my kids (i have a few special needs kids) and hands down the best nurses we have had have been guys. AND, there is always a need for nurses... lots of jobs. Good luck! You can do it :)

Cool Chris! You'd make a great nurse...there are lots of male nurses in the field now. I've work at Madison Hospital in Rexburg as a nurse for 8 years and I love it!! The BYU-I program is great and they have a "non trad" group where you would fit it. Go with it!!

If that is what you love, then do it! I've been struggling with that lately as well. I'm trying to figure out what I want to go back to school for as well. :)

Good luck!
