Growing Pains... No Thanks

I know every day cannot be a good day.  I try to stay positive and upbeat, but dang it, today sucked.  I was very excited about speed work today.  I was there on time, and I felt good. But, not even a lap into the run, my ankle started hurting a little.  I thought, "Just work through the pain, and it will go away."  Well it didn't, and by my second 800, I was in pain!  My ankle hurt, and it spread up into my shin.  So I stopped running and walked a half mile hoping it would start to feel better.  It did a little, but I knew as soon as I stopped and sat down it would tighten up, and it did.

I know I will need to ice it a lot tonight and take it easy, because I don't want to have a serious injury.  I also think my pride was hurt as well because of it happening in front of my running group.  If I was out running alone and was forced to walk, I would have walked and not worried, but I was worried about what the others would think.  I was worried that people would say, "How is he going to run a marathon if he cannot even last a speed workout?"  I know it is silly, but those are the thoughts that went through my head.

So, chalk this one up as a learning experience.  I will get iced up and take it easy at boot camp on Thursday.  I will take a serious rest day on Friday, so I will be ready for my 9 miles this Saturday.  9 MILES!!  That is just crazy to think about!  I am excited for it!

Sorry about the ankle pain. you were SMART to stop running when you did and take it easy. Whenever I get frustrated about missing a workout in this kind of situation, my husband reminds me to look at the big picture. You want to be running and healthy long term, and taking care of your body, and resting when it hurts, will get you there. Good luck with the nine miles on Friday! :) you will be running double digit mileage before you know it.

Ouch! I'm sorry. When I was doing water aerobics the other day I pulled a leg muscle. It hurts like the dickens.

But it is good that you iced it and that you can be feeling better soon.
